Annapurna: The First Conquest of an 8,000-Meter Peak
On June 3, 1950, a team of French mountaineers led by Maurice Herzog made history by reaching the summit of Annapurna, the tenth highest mountain in the world and the first 8,000-meter peak to be climbed.
Annapurna is a formidable mountain, with steep slopes, treacherous crevasses, and unpredictable weather. The French team faced numerous challenges during their ascent, including altitude sickness, frostbite, and avalanches. But they persevered, and on the morning of June 3rd, Herzog and Louis Lachenal reached the summit.

The descent from Annapurna was even more harrowing than the ascent. Herzog and Lachenal were both severely frostbitten, and they had to be carried down the mountain by their teammates. But they eventually made it back to safety, and their achievement was hailed as one of the greatest feats in mountaineering history.
