Jackson was born in Keeseville, New York, in 1843. He began his career as a photographer in the 1860s, and in 1871 he joined the Hayden Geological Survey of the Territories. As a member of the survey, Jackson traveled to the Yellowstone region and photographed its geysers, hot springs, and other natural wonders.
In 1898, Jackson traveled to Alaska with the Harriman Alaska Expedition. The expedition was led by railroad magnate Edward Harriman, and its goal was to explore the natural resources of Alaska. Jackson's photographs of Alaska's glaciers were some of the first ever taken, and they helped to introduce the American public to the beauty and grandeur of this remote region.
Jackson's photographs of Alaska's glaciers were not just beautiful, they were also scientifically important. They provided evidence of the glaciers' rapid retreat, and they helped to raise awareness of the threat that climate change posed to these iconic landscapes.
In 1903, Jackson's photographs were used to help establish the National Park Service. The National Park Service was created to protect America's natural and cultural resources, and Jackson's photographs played a key role in convincing Congress to establish the agency.
Today, Jackson's photographs of Alaska's glaciers are still used to educate the public about the importance of conservation. They are a reminder of the beauty and fragility of our planet, and they inspire us to take action to protect our natural heritage.
