In the aftermath of the Bosnian War, Robert Kaplan embarked on a journey into the heart of darkness. He traveled to Sarajevo, the city that had been besieged for four years, and witnessed the devastation firsthand. He met with survivors of the conflict, and heard their stories of loss and suffering.

Kaplan's journey took him to other war-torn regions, including Kosovo, Chechnya, and Afghanistan. He saw the same patterns of violence and destruction, and the same human suffering. But he also saw something else: the resilience of the human spirit.
