Audie Murphy was born on June 20, 1925, in Kingston, Texas. He was the seventh of twelve children born to sharecroppers, and his family was very poor. Murphy's father died when he was young, and his mother struggled to make ends meet. As a result, Murphy had to start working at a young age to help support his family.

Murphy left school after the eighth grade and worked a variety of jobs, including sharecropping, farming, and logging. He also spent time in a Civilian Conservation Corps camp. In 1942, Murphy joined the US Army. He was assigned to the 15th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division.

Murphy saw combat in North Africa, Sicily, Italy, France, and Germany. He quickly distinguished himself as a brave and skilled soldier. In January 1945, Murphy was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions at Anzio, Italy. He single-handedly held off a German attack, killing or wounding over 200 enemy soldiers.

Murphy was also awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, the Silver Star, the Bronze Star, and the Purple Heart. He was the most decorated American soldier of World War II.

After the war, Murphy returned home to the United States. He married Wanda Hendrix in 1949, and they had two children. Murphy struggled to adjust to civilian life, and he often had nightmares about the war. He also battled alcoholism and depression.

In 1955, Murphy starred in the film "To Hell and Back," which was based on his autobiography. The film was a critical and commercial success, and it helped Murphy to become a national hero.

Murphy continued to act in films and television shows throughout the 1950s and 1960s. He also wrote several books about his experiences in World War II. In 1971, Murphy died in a plane crash. He was just 46 years old.
