The 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment was the first official African American regiment in the Union Army during the American Civil War. The regiment was formed in 1863 and served until the end of the war in 1865. The 54th Massachusetts was one of the most famous and successful African American regiments in the war, and its members fought with distinction in many battles, including the Battle of Fort Wagner and the Battle of Olustee.

The 54th Massachusetts was commanded by Colonel Robert Gould Shaw, a white abolitionist from Boston. Shaw was a strong believer in the equality of all men, and he was determined to prove that African American soldiers could fight as well as white soldiers. The regiment was made up of both free and enslaved African Americans, and many of its members had never before held a weapon. Despite these challenges, the 54th Massachusetts quickly became a well-disciplined and effective fighting force.
